Game on Thursday!

Russ is back from his honeymoon so there's finally a game on this Thursday.  We're going Rome vs Carthage again as my Greeks and his Persians aren't quite ready.

But we get to play at the new venue (with beer and peanuts on tap!) and Nigel is also turning up.  He's bringing a chest so we can store the scenery etc. safely on site.

Nigel is mainly a Naps player but he's willing to give ancients / medieval a try.  We may just give him the Romans to play with and see if the string of Roman victories really are down to superior troops or (as I suspect) down to excellent generalship on my part.  He is also a massive history buff, always full of interesting anecdotes and impressions from history, so it should be a good evening.

As we're driving we'll be limited to 1 pint each though (curses!).

Still - its been a long, long time between games so it will be good to get back into the saddle and walloping those pesky North Africans again.

  1. If you game long enough you might safely squeeze in a second pint. Hard to argue with gaming longer with that sort of incentive.

  2. Good idea Al. Pint when we start and one half way through.

Its what Scipio would have done.

  3. Could be Whiskey if my Carthaginians are thrashed again! - I hope to try out something new this time, I have to find the correct strategy and tactics to try and force a win somewhere on the field, the Romans are good but half the fun is trying out different ideas, unfortunately all too often these tend to go wrong lol!

  4. As a carthaginian player all i can suggest is keep your elephants away from anything that can shoot! Ive lost my elephants almost eveytime ive played to light horse bow and javelins. If you work out a winning combo let me know as im off to my first FOG tournament in a months time and i just cant figure out how to win with them.

  5. we have played 7 battles now with Romans V Carthage and its currently at 5 - 2 in favour of the Romans. I the victories I did pull off one was down to Phil's movement of troops across the field exposing flanks so that does'nt really count, the other win I managed to use the terrain, had some luck with dice rolls in the middle ground in a big skirmish exchange and did manage to wingle a good victory but I know what you mean ! its tough to win with the Carthaginians. I don't think the elephants are much use, I have always lost mine because as a two base BG they auto rout when one base goes so not really that impressed. the 50 points are used on other upgrades to my cavalry and scutarri.

I think it is key to try and get your african spears in, as they are the best units by far. I have had no luck with my cavalry and the slingers and nunidian spears have never really stood up to the roman velites.

So try to have your spears as a front line troops, screen them with skirmishers if you like and have gauls/scutari on left and right flanks, you could keep your cavalry in reserve or overload one of the flanks.

    Good luck!

  6. Thanks for the info Iron Chicken ill try what you suggest and see if my luck improves - i know the elephants are a bit of a class cannon but they look cool and against cav they are pretty deadly. Hopefully ill have my new camera arrive this afternoon and ill finially be able to take some pics of my army.

  7. Bwah hah hah hah hah!

All your plans are for naught! The mighty Roman Republic may have had a look at the allies list and decided to bring some different elements to bear to counter your cavalry.
